The Void

After reading the title of this post, you probably think it's about the void. You're wrong. This post isn't about the void. It's about the fact that two contemporary adepts and magical authors are deeply interested in the void and frequently write about it. I think this fact is worth some discussion.

For those who haven't figured it out, the two adepts I am referring to are William Mistele (Bill) and Josephine McCarthy. As far I'm aware, Bill is pretty unfamiliar with Josephine's writings and Josephine is pretty unfamiliar with Bill's writings. Their respective approaches to magic also differ greatly. However, despite that they are unfamiliar with with each other and have different approaches to magic, I have made two observations.

1. They both write frequently about the void.

2. A lot of what they write about the void's properties is the same.

Let's discuss the implications of both of these observations. In the first one, we begin by noticing that two very different adepts who are both well-known figures in the magical world are both moved to write frequently about the void. Doesn't that seem kind of strange? Magic is about service to Divinity. Here we have two very skilled servants of Divinity who are both deeply connected to Divinity through their training writing frequently about the void. It seems pretty obvious that Divine Providence really wants the magical world to acquire a better understanding of the void and a better mastery over the techniques for accessing it and using it. Thus, I suggest those magicians who are unfamiliar with the void familiarize themselves with it, at least on an intellectual level. Depending on how far along in your training you are, the time may not be right for practical work with the void just yet.

As far as the second observation goes, I notice that both Bill and Josephine regularly bring up the following facts about the void in their writings.

1. The void is the source of all. Everything in the created universe comes from the void and will eventually return to the void. All power and energy emanates from the void, and thus, if the magician needs power and energy, he can draw it from the void.

2. The void can only be accessed if one is in a state of inner stillness and silence. This is why meditation is a big part of any genuine magician's training.

3. The void can be used for defensive purposes. If a curse is sent your way, entering the void will result in the curse being unable to find you. This will cause the curse to circle back to the person who sent it. If a negative spirit is attacking you and you enter the void, the spirit will no longer be able to see you or sense you.

As an interesting side note, I'll mention that although Bill and Josephine both regularly bring up the three points listed above in their writings on the void, the practical subset of their writings on the void center around different applications for this inner realm / state of consciousness. The void, being a vacuum, is capable of dissolving anything. It is also filled with a sense of peace and stillness. Bill likes to write about bringing people into the void in order to dissolve their malice, fear, and arrogance, and to help them acquire a state of inner peace. Josephine, on the other hand, likes to write about using the void as a gateway between different realms. It seems that in their different lines of magical work, they have each specialized in a different application of the void. Thus, you can find information about the void in Bill's writings that you can't find in Josephine's, and vice versa.

But in any case, to go back to what I was saying earlier, if Divine Providence wants the magical community to learn more about the void and becoming better at using it, then clearly the work that the magicians of the present and the future need to do in order to uphold the balance and harmony of the universe and guide the evolution of humanity will require them to use the void a lot. This isn't surprising, after all, the void is a very useful tool.

The Bardonists reading this post might wonder what they should begin doing differently in light of the information contained in this post. The answer is nothing. The best way to prepare yourself to enter and work with the void is to learn to achieve VOM and continually increase your proficiency in achieving VOM. This is already a part of the work of IIH, so there isn't anything you should do differently. However, if you don't know a lot about the void, perhaps devoting more of your reading time to Bill and Josephine's writings on the subject would be a good idea.

Josephine's writings on the void can be found in her books. In particular, check out the first two books in her Magical Knowledge series.

  1. Hello Virgil, the first two books of Magical Knowledge series are the same of Apprentice and Initiate in Quareia? Thank You. Guido

    1. They're not the same. The Magical Knowledge series is not a fully fleshed out course the way Quareia or IIH is. The first book of the Magical Knowledge series is a collection of helpful information for those at the apprentice level of training, and the second book of the magical knowledge series is a collection of helpful information for those at the initiate level of training. The apprentice and initiate levels of Quareia, however, take you step by step through those levels, rather than just giving helpful information to those who happen to be at those levels.

    2. I should have reread what I wrote in the blog post to get a better idea of the context of your question. If you're looking to begin exploring the void, it's Magical Knowledge I you want, since that's the book where Josephine describes the void and teaches a technique for entering it. There's also an audio file guiding you through the technique on her website.

Magical Knowledge II assumes you are already proficient at entering the void and teaches you how to use the void as a gateway to enter various inner plane realms.

There probably is stuff about the void in Quareia, but although I'm curious about the course, I haven't done more than skim a handful of lessons since I've been busy between my crazy-ass work schedule and my own magical projects.

  2. Thank You for your kindness and the in-depth and exhaustive answer. I continue to work with IIH, but the books of Josephine McCarthy, seems to be very good. Thank you for introducing me to this author and her Work.

    1. Yep, that's the key. Stay focused on whatever system is the best one for you, but at the same time investigate other systems and teachings to acquire useful information that can supplement your training. In other words, explore without becoming distracted. I think you'll find that Josephine's writings have a lot to offer.
